Introduction
The idea of creating a Hartem Basketball record book came about during the fall of 2006. Mr. Dave McGraw, a retired Hartem coach and athletic director, dropped off several binders full of old statistics compiled by the late Lyndon Westen. The amount of time and detail put into these binders was overwhelming. Mr. Westen’s passion for Hartem athletics can be easily seen by looking through this material. This project must of been a true labor of love. The Hartem athletic program was truly lucky to have had someone who was such an asset. Much of these school records and statistics would have never been known without his work.
About the same time that Mr. Westen's work was given to the school, the school decided to return to two week mini courses between semesters. Coach Nauman and Coach Ziemba planned a course on Hartem Basketball Records and Statistics in order to update Mr. Westens work and get some of the hand written information stored on computers. The students were able to get this information updated and stored on computers. Craig Lessen was asked to continue work on the web-site after Coach Nauman left Hartem for another coaching position. Craig is currently in charge of the Hartem web-site.
All of the statistics and records are complete to the best of our knowledge. All of the team and individual scoring statistics are complete, and were compiled from season ending reports from coaches, newspaper box scores, and score books. Other statistics such as rebounds, assists, steals, field goals, and free throws are incomplete. I can only put information that is available to me at this time. I currently have season ending statistical reports from 44 of the 65 Hartem seasons. I am sure that there are many players that are not recognized because of missing statistics. If anyone forwards any missing statistics, photos, or newspaper clippings to the school or me, I will gladly add it to this site. Please check out the missing statistics and missing team pictures under the home section on this web site to see if you might have some missing information. I want all teams and individuals to be recognized for their achievments.
The following “Preface” was on the front page of one of Mr. Westen’s binders. We felt it was a very moving piece and needed to be included in this record book.
Preface
I compiled these records in an attempt to accurately recognize some of the teams and the men who have honored our program by their triumphs.
But keep these records in proper prospective.
Every season, athletes leave our program without having their specific accomplishments and names recorded on these pages. That does not necessarily mean these athletes will be forgotten.
Every athlete who has worn our colors and who has honored our high school by a totally dedicated commitment to be the very best they could be; and by giving the very best they had to give during each moment of practices and games; and who recognized and acknowledged that identical commitment in their coaches, teammates, officials and competitors, will always be honored in our memories.
Many people will tell you that:
“You Work Hard and Give You’re Very Best and Sometimes That Just Isn’t Good Enough.”
Those people are wrong! Not only is that good enough…It’s the ultimate!
Life is not about setting records. Life is about working hard, playing by the rules, focusing on your goals and getting knocked on your butt. Then it’s getting up and trying again… Become totally exhausted and discouraged and wanting to quit; but sucking it up and “pressing on.” Not because your goals are still attainable but because that’s who you are and what you are.
Go Stags!!
